“ Master craftsmanship. When we got the menus we thought someone was out of their depth and trying too hard. It turned out it was us that learned new things. This is the best meal I have ever eaten in South Africa. The creator is obviously a master. Go here as soon as you can. ”

“ My favorite restaurant in CPT! I love the Scandinavian influence and the very unique twist the dishes have. The pizza is a must try, as well as the pecan pie ice cream. They also offer non-alcoholic drinks, which are not too sweet and nowadays are a must on every drink list! The service is a 10/10 and the ambient has this industrial chic you would expect in Soho. ”

“ Elgr is one of my all time favourites. Moody without being too moody, sophisticated without being pretentious, and somehow both forest calm and city cool. The sage greens, charcoal tones and soft foliage look straight off someone’s Pinterest board. The open kitchen blends into the slightly mysterious atmosphere beautifully. And the cocktails… Elgr’s bar team doesn’t mix drinks, they compose them. Every drink feels curated and intentional. Their food menu is globally inspired, beautifully plated, and made for sharing, perfect for a first date. Which brings me to why I was here. You know those Hinge matches where it could either vibe or be a spectacular disaster? That was the energy. He also casually said he’s a “snacker” while I’m a very open “eater”. But CSI Paige logic kicked in: tapas = snacks = food. Perfect middle ground. So I suggested Elgr (genius of me). Kloof Street was moody and cinematic when I arrived. Jose, the doorman, instantly made me feel calmer, he always does. I saw my date and thankfully, no catfishing detected. Things instantly felt promising. When he suggested we share six plates, my soul ascended. Our waitress, Shanice, had the warmest energy. She explained every dish like someone who has opinions, and I loved that. First cocktails arrived, my Spring Tea came in a tiny jug and was light, refreshing and nostalgic, like a Cape Town summer in a glass. The plates landed and my faith in humanity was restored. The burrata was creamy with bright lemon, mint and bergamot. The croutons were buttery perfection. It needed a touch more seasoning, but flaky sea salt fixed that. The blood orange and Belnori cheese salad was a total surprise, refreshing, sharp, sweet, sexy. Then the negronis arrived (hydration!) and they slapped. Two beautifully dark plates followed. The beetroot salad with goat’s cheese and pistachio was delicious, though I wished the beetroot was slightly sweeter. Still solid. Then the showstopper: the raw beef dish. One of the best tartare style plates I’ve had. Tender beef, bright dill and sour cream, crunchy potato crisp, and trout roe popping like tiny fireworks. Mr Raw Beef could definitely get a second date. For the final course, we ordered smoked apricot sours, my favourite drink of the night. Warm, smoky, bright, caramelised, dangerous in the best way. And, of course, you can’t go to Elgr without getting a pizza. We chose the kale, oyster mushroom and hazelnut pizza with cucumber salad. The pizza was dramatic and gorgeous with a smoky, blistered crust. The topping combo made complete sense on the palate, salty kale, meaty mushrooms, earthy hazelnuts. The cucumber salad was the perfect palate reset and genuinely a hidden gem. Overall, such a fantastic evening. Elgr proves again why it’s one of my top Kloof Street favourites. Stylish, intimate, reliable, and always hitting the brief. The cocktails are memorable, the food consistently brilliant, and Shanice tied everything together. You leave full, happy, floaty, and ready for whatever comes next. It’s the kind of place that makes a Hinge date feel cinematic. Thank you Elgr, till next time! ”

“ We were immediately impressed with the friendly staff and exceptional service from start to finish. We were excited to enjoy a meal in a cozy restaurant with a fireplace, and Eglr met our expectations. The ambiance was warm and inviting, with charming decor and soft lighting that created a perfect setting for a relaxing evening. The menu was intriguing and our waiter took the time to explain each dish to us. The food was stunningly presented and incredibly delicious. We particularly enjoyed the chicken dish, which was a delightful blend of flavors and textures. The cocktails were equally impressive; we decided to explore the cocktail menu and were thrilled with the creativity and taste of each drink. Overall, it was a memorable dining experience, and we appreciated the special touches that made our visit unique. We look forward to returning and highly recommend Eglr to anyone seeking an exceptional meal in a cozy, welcoming environment. ”

“ Visited in June 2025. South Africa. Cape Town ???????? I'd been eyeing EGRL for a while, but since they're only open in the evenings, we finally decided to pop in when we were in the neighborhood. The atmosphere is pleasant, with a decor in muted beige tones, although the lighting was a bit dim inside. FOOD: The restaurant presents a take on European cuisine with a focus on sharing plates. There are also vegetarian options available. We chose four appetizers to share between the two of us. First up was the Four Cheese Pizza. The dough was perfectly cooked in a Neapolitan style, and there was a generous amount of topping. The pizza was wonderfully juicy, and there was just the right amount of blue cheese to give it a tangy kick. Next, we had the Cucumber, Kohlrabi, Walnut, Dijon & Lemon dish, which offered a fresh, vibrant flavor – a great appetizer to cleanse the palate. We also sampled their House Made, 12 Month, Cured Serrano, which was delicious. SERVICE: The service was efficient and pleasant. The dishes came out relatively quickly, and we felt like welcome guests. VERDICT: We enjoyed our evening at this wonderful spot. The food was tasty – perhaps some of the dishes lacked a bit of visual flair, but it's safe to say it's comfortable and satisfying food. It's probably a good idea to book a table in advance. ”
